Leadership and Capacity Building

* Women’s Governance and Peacebuilding Project (Pader)

Women in the north of Uganda have been left particularly vulnerable to the economic and social issues resulting from years of violent conflict, yet they remain at the periphery of the formation of policies to address these issues. The purpose of this project is to support and facilitate the women of the district of Pader to be able to gain governance authority and take part in the development and peacebuilding processes. The project activities include conducting district-wide research and comprehensive leadership, peacebuilding and business training, the formation of a network of grassroots women sustained through ongoing dialogue, and facilitation of locally designed and implemented economic projects. These activities are focused on enhancing the capacity of women to strengthen their role in governance and peacebuilding. This will result in the active engagement of women in the development and peacebuilding processes and more equitable participation in governance. The main beneficiaries of this project are the women of Pader, particularly disadvantaged women such as widows, HIV positive women and women with disabilities. There will also be some focus placed on youth, as the strength and sustainability of governance and peacebuilding systems rests on the shoulders of future generations. The project will also benefit all Ugandans by facilitating more inclusive government policies.

* Youth Empowerment Project (Pader)

Abducted and forced to become child soldiers or soldier’s brides; left parentless; or forced to leave their homes and families for the relative safety of Internally Displaced Peoples (IDP) camps, the youth of Pader have been severely impacted by the 22-years of violence in the north. They are now trying to rebuild their lives.

Similar to the Women’s Governance and Peacebuilding Project, the purpose of this project is to support and facilitate the youth of the district of Pader to be able to gain governance authority and take part in development and peacebuilding processes, while reducing youth’s propensity to engage in risky behaviours (i.e. drugs, alcohol, etc.). The project activities include conducting district-wide research and comprehensive leadership, peace building and business training, the formation of a network of grassroots youth sustained through ongoing dialogue, the implementation of a drug, alcohol and risky behaviour sensitization program, and the facilitation of locally designed and implemented economic projects. These activities are focused on creating the capacity of youth to strengthen their role in governance and peacebuilding. This will result in the active engagement of youth in the development and peacebuilding processes and more equitable participation in governance. The main beneficiaries of this project are the youth of Pader, particularly disadvantaged youth such as former child soldiers, soldier brides, young mothers, HIV positive youth and youth with disabilities. The project will also benefit all Ugandans by facilitating more inclusive government policies and reducing youth idleness and delinquency.
