This summer, 7 students from Wilfrid Laurier University came to Arua, Uganda as interns. As a joint project between Laurier’s PFAI Chapter and the campus group Future of Africa, the students gained first hand experience creating and implementing projects, as well as a better understanding of what working with a grassroots NGO in rural Uganda is like.
Strong focus on Pader District
PFAI began working in northern Uganda in 2007 just as the conflict was ending, the time when most NGOs were pulling out. PFAI realized that without outside support and focused post-conflict programs, the region could easily slip back into conflict.
Just because conflict has ended, doesn’t mean the need isn’t there.
Pader District, for example, is still struggling with extreme poverty, trauma, and a severely diminished capacity to develop. It was the site of some of the most severe fighting, but also relatively unsupported by government forces. Many would argue it was therefore the hardest hit by the conflict.
But it is also one of the areas where there are still few NGOs and little government support for development, making a top priority for PFAI.
PFAI won’t let the people of Pader be left behind. We believe in seeing our projects through to the end before moving on to other areas. We feel it is the most responsible way to engage in development work.
Help us keep our Pader projects going. Please donate today.
